WHAT IS PRETRIAL SERVICES?
New Orleans Pretrial Services (NOPTS) brings to New Orleans a program utilized in over 300 jurisdictions around the country for assessing and supervising defendants while they await trial. The program assists the judges of the Orleans Parish Criminal Justice System in reaching pretrial release decisions that reasonably assure that defendants will return to court and not engage in criminal activity. By assessing the risk level of defendants, providing supervision services, and coordinating treatment. NOPTS ensures that defendants have the opportunity required by law to await trial under the least restrictive conditions that ensure public safety and return to court. This has the additional public benefit of reducing incarceration costs, allowing criminal justice dollars to be spent more effectively.
